INDICATIONS To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of ACTICLATE and other antibacterial drugs, ACTICLATE should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. When culture and susceptibility information are available, they should be considered in selecting or modifying antibacterial therapy. In the absence of such data, local epidemiology and susceptibility patterns may contribute to the empiric selection of therapy. Doxycycline is a tetracycline-class antibacterial indicated in the following conditions or diseases: Rickettsial Infections Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus fever and the typhus group, Q fever, rickettsial pox, and tick fevers caused by Rickettsiae. Acticlate (doxycycline hyclate) is an antibiotic used to treat rickettsial infections, sexually transmitted infections, respiratory tract infections, specific bacterial infections, ophthalmic infections, anthrax, as adjunctive therapy in acute intestinal amebiasis and severe acne, and to prevent malaria. Common side effects include anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, photosensitivity, and rash. The usual adult dose of Acticlate is 200 mg on the first day of treatment (administered 100 mg every 12 hours), followed by a maintenance dose of 100 mg daily. Acticlate may interact with anticoagulants, penicillin, oral contraceptives, barbiturates, carbamazepine, phenytoin, methoxyflurane, and antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium, bismuth subsalicylate, and iron-containing preparations. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Acticlate is not recommended for use during pregnancy. This drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
