この薬の作用と効果について
交感神経抑制作用により、血管を拡げ血圧を下げます。
通常、本態性高血圧症の治療に用いられます。

次のような方は使う前に必ず担当の医師と薬剤師に伝えてください。
以前に薬を使用して、かゆみ、発疹などのアレルギー症状が出たことがある。肝障害、腎障害、心臓疾患、脳血管障害がある。妊娠または授乳中他に薬を使っている（お互いに作用を強めたり、弱めたりする可能性もありますので、大衆薬も含めて他に使用中の医薬品に注意してください）。

用法・用量（この薬の使い方）
通常、成人は1回1錠（グアナベンズとして2mg）を1日2回服用しますが、効果が不十分な場合は1回2錠（4mg）に増量され、1日2回服用します。年齢・症状により適宜増減されます。必ず指示された服用方法に従ってください。飲み忘れた場合は、気がついた時にできるだけ早く飲んでください。ただし、次の通常飲む時間が近い場合は、忘れた分は飲まないで1回分を飛ばしてください。絶対に2回分を一度に飲んではいけません。誤って多く飲んだ場合は医師または薬剤師に相談してください。医師の指示なしに、自分の判断で飲むのを止めないでください。

生活上の注意
眠気、めまい、ふらつきなどがあらわれることがありますので、高所作業や自動車の運転など危険を伴う作業はしないようにしてください。飲酒により薬の作用が強くあらわれることがありますので、服用中の飲酒はひかえてください。

副作用
主な副作用として、口渇、眠気、めまい、発疹、顔面湿疹、じん麻疹、かゆみなどが報告されています。このような症状に気づいたら、担当の医師または薬剤師に相談してください。まれに下記のような症状があらわれ、［　］内に示した副作用の初期症状である可能性があります。
このような場合には、使用をやめて、すぐに医師の診療を受けてください。該当する記載事項はありません。以上の副作用はすべてを記載したものではありません。上記以外でも気になる症状が出た場合は、医師または薬剤師に相談してください。

保管方法その他
乳幼児、小児の手の届かないところで、高温、湿気を避けて暗所で保管してください。薬が残った場合、保管しないで廃棄してください。廃棄については受け取った薬局に相談してください。

What is Guanabenz acetate?
Guanabenz is used alone or with thiazide type diuretics to treat high blood pressure.

What is the most important information I should know about Guanabenz acetate?
You must take guanabenz regularly for it to be effective. Since blood pressure declines gradually, it may be several weeks before you get the full benefit of the drug. You must continue taking it even if you are feeling well. Guanabenz does not cure high blood pressure; it only keeps it under control.

Do not discontinue therapy with guanabenz abruptly. It may cause rebound hypertension (a sudden sharp increase in blood pressure). This is very dangerous and is a medical emergency.

Who should not take Guanabenz acetate?
Do not take guanabenz if you are sensitive to it or have ever had an allergic reaction to it.

What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Guanabenz acetate?
Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with guanabenz. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have severe heart disease, have had a stroke, severe kidney or liver failure, or if you have recently had a heart attack.

What is the usual dosage?
The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: The usual starting dose is 4 milligrams (mg) taken 2 times per day. Your doctor may increase the dosage by 4 to 8 mg per day every 1 to 2 weeks, depending on your blood pressure response.

The maximum dose studied to date has been 32 mg twice daily, but high doses like this are rarely needed.

The safety and effectiveness of guanabenz has not been established in children less than 12 years of age.

How should I take Guanabenz acetate?
Take guanabenz exactly as prescribed. Do not stop taking it abruptly. You can take it with or without food.

What should I avoid while taking Guanabenz acetate?
Guanabenz may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities.

Avoid quickly rising from sitting or lying down positions, especially first thing in the morning because of possible dizziness.

Avoid alcohol, which may increase the dizziness or drowsiness caused by guanabenz. Avoid using other drugs that can cause drowsiness, including antidepressants, antihistamines, anxiety medicines, muscle relaxants, pain relievers, and seizure medicines.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Guanabenz acetate?
If guanabenz is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining guanabenz with the following: Alcohol, antidepressants (including MAO inhibitors such as phenelzine and tranylcypromine; serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as fluoxetine, paroxetine; and tricyclics such as amitriptyline, imipramine), anti-infective agents, antihistamines (such as clemastine, chlorpheniramine, and diphenhydramine), antiseizure drugs (such as phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone), digitalis, diuretics, muscle relaxants, pain relievers such as hydrocodone/acetaminophen, sedatives and tranquilizers (such as alprazolam, diazepam, triazolam), phenothiazines

What are the possible side effects of Guanabenz acetate?
Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, weakness

Can I receive Guanabenz acetate if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
The effects of guanabenz during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Guanabenz acetate?
Take it as soon you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take 2 doses at the same time. If you forget to take your medication 2 or more times in a row, contact your doctor.

How should I store Guanabenz acetate?
Store at room temperature, in a tightly closed container, and away from light.
